NEW DELHI: Days after it was revealed that chowmein can lead to rape, a new textbook for Class VI says non-vegetarian “food causes you to easily cheat, tell lies, forget promises, be dishonest, steal and commit sex crimes”. In other words, consuming non-veg turns you into a politician.  Apparently, it also turns you into a terrorist, as seen by Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab‘s constant demands for biryani.  The claims in the book have led to outrage across the country. A number of criminals as well as incarcerated politicians have sought termination of their prison terms, blaming all their crimes on non-veg food. While former telecom minister A Raja has blamed his misdemeanors on a plate of butter chicken, former IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi felt he over-ate some mutton-do-piaza before the Commonwealth Games.  Even N D Tiwari claimed a dish of succulent seekh kebabs was the real culprit behind the “magical appearance” of a son.

Union HRD minister M M Pallam Raju called the text “unfortunate and an occasional aberration” while consuming the leg piece of a tandoori chicken. “It is a textbook case of a non-veg joke gone bad,” he told reporters. A reporter than proceeded to pull his leg…err piece. The minister was not amused.  Later, some chicken-loving teachers threatened to go on a “book hartal”. A spokesman for the Non-Vegetarian Teachers Association said: “We refuse to open a book till schools and the government turn text-savvy.” A poorly paid teacher put it in perspective: “We have gone from non-wage jokes to non-veg jokes.”   Interestingly, the book also lauds the Japanese for their vegetarian diet, which it says leads to a longer life span. Apparently, the author hasn’t heard of the word “sushi”. The Japanese also plan to include the text in a book, or rather a joke book.  Meanwhile, the sabzi mandi saw a massive increase in demand for vegetables, pushed by anxious parents eager to prevent their kids from becoming part of the government. In fact, a number of people from coastal states like West Bengal, Kerala and Goa have demanded that the government classify fish as a vegetable.

To top it all, many schools now plan to include a chapter on vegetarianism with pictures of scantily clad vegetarian models from PETA and do away with the chapter on sex education. A government official said no reference will be made to meat products or chicken barring the one objective type question: “Why did the chicken cross the road?“

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra police have arrested a five-year-old child for allegedly making disparaging remarks about Spider-Man on Facebook. Apparently, the child posted a question on his wall: “There is no zipper in Spider-Man’s suit. Where does he pee from?” Another child who liked the comment was also arrested.

The cops showed remarkable alacrity in the matter and swooped down on these tiny tots of terror who were all set to spread terror using Facebook. They also seized their crayons and action figures as evidence. The kids were booked under POTA, TADA and some ancient law called the IT Act. Apparently, the “heinous attack” on the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man cannot be tolerated because India – which has never had a friendly neighborhood – refuses to condone any sort of negative remarks against public figures.

Calling the children a “threat to national security”, a senior police official said:”How dare these kids have an opinion on anything. What do they think this is? A democracy?” Later, a mob of some regional party supporters attacked an ice-cream parlor run by the child’s mother. Apparently they were huge Spidey supporters. Besides, they didn’t like the parlor’s vanilla ice-cream. It was too white.

When a reporter asked the IT minister about the arrests and free speech, he said: “Of course Indians have free speech. It’s broadcast from Red Fort on 15th August and is very, very long.”  Another minister said: “We can’t have people voicing their opinions on netas on Facebook. Next you’ll have them linking A Raja to the 2G scam or Suresh Kalmadi to the CWG scam or, horror of horrors, show Madhu Koda and Lalu Prasad as corrupt. This should be nipped in the bud.”

Meanwhile, the kids have found massive support by netizens. A number of people posted vague questions on Superheroes to show their support. One person asked: “Why does Phantom wear a purple leotard in a green jungle?” Another wanted to know the “purpose of the ears in Batman’s costume”. Meanwhile, a number of activists have appealed for a moratorium on posting anything sensible on Facebook. If you do have to post anything, use some complicated language. Apparently, the IQ levels of these offended parties are our last line of defense.

To ward off dengue and malaria fever, people in Jharkhand‘s Bokaro district are offering prayers to the ‘mosquito god’ to seek a shield against the life-threatening mosquito-borne diseases.

A big mosquito statue was installed at Chas a day earlier and a procession organised Monday by devotees who beat drums and chanted mantras to appease the winged god. A priest recited mantras in the presence of hundreds of people and the statue was also garlanded and worshipped before the holy fire.

“Hundreds of suspected dengue cases have been reported in the district. The health department is yet to wake up. We have sought a shield from the ‘mosquito god’ and tried to appease it by installing a statute and worshiping it,” Rajendra Mahto, a district resident, said. Four people have died of suspected dengue in the district which has reported around 130 cases of high fever this season. The blood samples of the patients have been sent to Ranchi and the district administration was yet to confirm the dengue cases.

“There is no facility in the district to detect dengue. The government has failed to act in time to curb the menace,” said Poonam Sinha, another devotee of the ‘mosquito god’.

When the iconic Playboy Enterprises announced the launch of its clubs in Goa, India in November, the big question on fans’ minds was what the Playboy bunny costume would be.  This was unveiled at a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday. The famous corset has been tweaked with an allusion to sari and paired with a translucent ankle-length skirt. But the other trademark paraphernalia, like the ears, bow tie and tail, remain.  The new sheer corsets do not follow the traditional, skimpier Playboy Bunny uniform, in that sheer panelling has been added.

But even with the culturally-cognizant design, some fear the costumes mark a slippery slope and that opening the Playboy club would encourage debaucherous and vulgar behavior.

Revealing: The new bunny costumes for the Indian Playboy club in Mumbai, opting for a more demure take on the waitress outfits but keeping the ears, bow-ties and fluffy tails. Risky business: Some are wary of the new club and the way its waitresses will dress, because they clash with traditional Indian modesty. Dilip Parulekar, the tourism minister to Goa, said in November: ‘We will not entertain anyone who is here to spread obscenity and nudity,’ according to the Times of India. Sanjay Gupta, the chief of Playboy India explained the rationale behind the still-skimpy apparel in a country where modesty is highly valued. ‘Revealing outfits are frowned up to in this country. If you watch Bollywood films, you will see women dressed far sexier and in more revealing outfits,’ he told the Telegraph.

The change in the costume, designed by US-based Mohini Tadikonda ‘keeping in mind Indian sensibilities’ is a first for Playboy, its executive vice-president and chief revenue officer Matthew Nordby said. Playboy, which has its origins in the magazine founded by Hugh Hefner in 1953, inked a deal with its India licensee PB Lifestyle India in November to open at least 120 outlets over the next 10 years.

The outlets include clubs, bars and cafes. The first club is coming up on the Candolim beach in Goa by March, which will be followed by another one in Hyderabad. But fans looking to see Indian women in the bunny costume are in for disappointment as for now the bunnies will all be foreigners.

 SAN MATEO, Calif. — A sex romp at a public park helped prosecutors convict a California woman of faking an ankle injury to collect workers’ compensation payments, authorities said.Modupe Adunni Martin, 29, was sentenced to nine months in jail on Thursday in San Mateo County after pleading no contest in October to felony workers compensation fraud. Martin was caught on videotape in August 2009 throwing her crutches into a car and running in high heels to meet her boyfriend at a public park, where she took part in a sex act that doctors concluded she couldn’t have done with an injured ankle, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. She was arrested and charged with 10 counts of insurance fraud.

“I guess love just helps one get over injuries,” Wagstaffe said in a phone interview on Friday. Martin reported the injury in February 2009 while working as a janitor for the Sequoia Union High School District. Claiming the injury left her unable to walk, Martin made 10 visits to doctors over a three-month span. A co-worker suspected she was exaggerating and alerted the district, which advised investigators. Martin was taken into custody after sentencing. A call to her attorney, Emily Andrews, by The Associated Press was not immediately returned. Martin was also sentenced to 3 years of supervised probation and ordered to pay more than $79,000 in restitution.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Ah, Christmas in Rhode Island. Exquisitely decorated mansions in Newport. A red nose on the giant termite that sits atop a Providence exterminator’s building. And a traffic cop, doing disco and salsa moves in the middle of rush-hour traffic. Officer Tony Lepore is as much a holiday tradition as anything else in the state that issued the first jail sentence for speeding 108 years ago. Since 1984, he has entertained drivers, pedestrians and gawkers with dance moves in downtown Providence – all while directing traffic.

“He is a Rhode Island landmark, more or less. He’s an icon, he’s like a little mini celebrity,” says Michelle Peterson, of Warwick. She’s an emergency medical technician and the mother of three boys who was introduced to the “dancing cop” years ago by her partner in their ambulance.

This year, she took her boys to see Lepore, 65, perform and got him to pose for pictures with them. “It feels good to see him out here; it definitely brings the holiday spirit. I think people come out here just to see him and I think it brings some people to shop so they can see him.”

The routine, Lepore says, was born in the month of May of the boredom and aggravation that officers typically experience while directing rushing drivers and jaywalking pedestrians. He was inspired by classic “Candid Camera” television footage he saw a day earlier that showed police officers elsewhere directing traffic with flair. “I didn’t know if my bosses were going to like it, so a lot of times if I saw a boss come down, I’d be d oing my fancy stuff, then I’d go back and do it the old-fashioned way so I don’t get caught,” Lepore says.

His secret didn’t last long. City residents began calling the police station and raving about Lepore’s moves. A few days later, The Providence Journal, the state’s largest newspaper, came out with a story on the sensation.The positive publicity encouraged officials to endorse the dancing cop, who continued to perform until he left the job in 1988, when he went into business with his brother with a food and vending service. In 1992, Lepore says, he got a call from city officials asking him to rejoin the force to dance and direct traffic around Christmastime as they pushed to redefine the city’s image and bring visitors downtown. He signed a $1,200, 10-day contract as a reserve police officer and says he has frozen the value of the contract at the 1992 rate to encourage city officials to recall his services every year. Standing in traffic, he adjusts his cap, shakes his hip, raises and twists one leg and spins. In one of the more unusual moves, he bends his knees, leans far back and quickly alternates support for his body by keeping one hand on the ground while motioning to the traffic with the free hand. In one move, he goes down on his knees in homage to John Travolta‘s character in “Saturday Night Fever.” He says his body takes a pounding and that he has had knee surgery, pulled some muscles and even suffered stress fractures.

“This is ridiculous! Oh, man, this guy is the best,” an incredulous Vik Jay, a medical student at Brown University, says after seeing the “Dancing Cop” in action for the first time. “I’m from San Francisco. I used to go to Castro Street, and this is far more entertaining than anything I saw there.” Karen DeAngelis, of Pawtucket, was on a bus when she saw Lepore perform while directing traffic. She got out to watch him before continuing her journey. “I would come down here every year to see him if I were able to,” she says. “I’m not able to, and I just so happened to be here today. He’s that good and he’s that entertaining, and he really cheers people up.” Lepore says his dance moves are planned to send specific directions to drivers to avoid causing confusion at the intersection.

“I do it in such a way that even the people in the cars know what I mean, ’cause every dance move means something to the driver, and I make sure that he knows or she knows what I want them to do,” Lepore says. The dancing is not a distraction and has never caused incredulous drivers to crash, he says. “I think it would be more of a distraction if I was in a different town and they didn’t know I was out there, but most of Providence, they even know me by the sound of my whistle,” he said. “It’s more of a spectacle where people love to just come down here and see me do it around Christmastime, and they enjoy it … and I enjoy it.”

Teenage boys have been waiting for this news for years.  According to a new study, squeezing breasts can prevent cancer. Yes, really. More specifically, the, ahem, fresh research from UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that mechanical force can stop the rapid growth of cancer cells as well as guide them back to a normal, healthy growth pattern.  The findings were presented Monday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in San Francisco. In the studies, researchers grew malignant breast epithelial cells in a flexible silicone chamber. They would squeeze the silicone when the cells reached a new stage, and found that the compression aided in stopping the growth.

“People have known for centuries that physical force can influence our bodies,” said Gautham Venugopalan, a leading member of the research team at the University of California in Berkeley. ”When we lift weights our muscles get bigger. The force of gravity is essential to keeping our bones strong. Here we show that physical force can play a role in the growth – and reversion – of cancer cells.”

However, the study’s researchers are not advocating a friendly or firm squeeze as a cancer treatment, “Compression, in and of itself, is not likely to be a therapy,” said Daniel Fletcher, professor of bioengineering at Berkeley and faculty scientist at the Berkeley Lab, in a statement. “But this does give us new clues to track down the molecules and structures that could eventually be targeted for therapies.” So don’t get too excited.

Delhi —The Delhi Police reported last week that incidences of sexual violence in 2012 have plummeted to record lows, that is, if one excludes the rape in the capital. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of  police officers, women are less likely to be mildly sexually assaulted than ever before,” Delhi police also said “Now, as far as women being raped and abused in the most horrify circumstances imaginable, those numbers are of course up”.

As the odds of being inappropriately touched by a stranger on a bus continue to increase, Delhi police added that citizens can now rest easy as long as they’re not worried about sexual assault except rape by a friend or family.

It is often said that money can’t buy love. But trying telling that to a wealthy Indian man who splashed out $230,000 on a solid gold shirt in the hope it will attract female attention. Money-lender Datta Phuge 32, from Pimpri-Chinchwad, commissioned the shirt which took a team of 15 goldsmiths two weeks to make working 16 hours a day creating and weaving the gold threads. It comes complete with its own matching cuffs and a set of rings crafted from left-over gold. ’I know I am not the best looking man in the world but surely no woman could fail to be dazzled by this shirt?’ he explained.

‘The gold shirt has been one of my dreams,’ Mr Phuge told Indian newspaper the Pune Mirror.’It will be an embellishment to my reputation as the ‘Gold man of Pimpri”‘ Mr Phuge said. The gaudy shirt was assembled on a fabric base of imported white velvet, and comes with six Swarovski crystal buttons and an intricate belt, also made of gold.

We would like to warn people around the world about this upcoming apocalypse and start preparing for it in earnest”, the chief added.

Tokyo: Scientists from the Sapporo Medical University have published a study citing that consuming large quantities of beer is an effective treatment to fight off common colds and viruses.

A chemical compound in hops, the plant brewers use to give beer its bitter taste, provides an effective guard against a virus that can cause severe forms of pneumonia and bronchitis in youngsters, Sapporo Breweries said.In research with scientists at Sapporo Medical University, the compound — humulone — was found to be effective in curbing the respiratory syncytial (RS) virus, said the company, which funded the study.”The RS virus can cause serious pneumonia and breathing difficulties for infants and toddlers, but no vaccination is available at the moment to contain it,” said Jun Fuchimoto, a researcher from the company.

The virus tends to spread in winter and can also cause cold-like symptoms in adults.Fuchimoto said such small quantities of humulone were present in beer that someone would have to drink around 30 cans, each of 350 millilitres (12 oz), for it to have any virus-fighting effect.”We are now studying the feasibility of applying humulone to food or non-alcoholic products,” he said. “The challenge really is that the bitter taste is going to be difficult for children.”

New Delhi: As the city and country is still protesting the grotesque  rape of a 23 year old woman, news of another rap on a city bus hit the headlines. The new incident was reported on a Delhi city bus that was headed from Noida to Ghaziabad. The horrible rap act was performed by a gang of Medical College interns who were heading back after watching the movie, 8 Mile featuring rapper Eminem.

The group was so mesmerized by the star rappers performance that they decided to perform their own rap on their way home. Other onboard travellers had to bear the torture and watch the rap performance for a full 45 mins which lacked lyrics, rhythm and any musical sense. “They were loud, rough and totally out of control”, said fellow rider Manish Sharma. “We tried to stop them several times but they kept going on, one rap after the other. The group even lured other youngsters on the bus to join their act.” he added.

The group reportedly started with their rendition of ‘Slim Shady‘ followed by ‘The Way I am” and “Stan”.  As the group started with their version of “Just Lose it“, the bus driver could take it no more. He pulled the bus over, grabbed all the rappers by their collars and threw them off his ride.

National media and reporters have lauded the bravery of the bus driver. The Delhi department of transportation also announced a cash price of Rs 1.5 Lakh to the driver. “This is a great example of taking responsibility and action”, said activist Ram Lakhan. “The entire nation is determined to not stop any acts that cause individual or public discomfort”.

Boeing encouraging all passengers to wear smoke masks to avoid inhaling toxic smoke from battery fires

New York: An electrical fire filled the cabin of a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 with smoke  minutes after passengers disembarked following a non-stop flight from Tokyo. The Massachusetts Port Authority‘s fire chief, Bob Donahue, said the fire at Boston’s Logan Airport began in a battery pack for the plane’s auxiliary power unit, which runs the jet’s electrical systems when it’s not getting power from its engines.

Fire crews using infrared equipment found flames in a small compartment in the plane’s belly and had the fire out in about 20 minutes, he said. There was a flare-up later when a battery exploded, he added.The flight landed normally at about 10:15 a.m. Its 173 passengers and 11 crew members had already gotten off the jet when a mechanic spotted light smoke in the cockpit.

The new Boeing Dreamliner 787 has come under intense scrutiny following this and other failures with the airline. The company spokesman said that they are doing a full investigation to fix the problems and have assured customers that their planes are safe to fly. As a precaution and to prevent passengers from breathing any toxic fumes, the company announced that they will distribute free face masks to all passengers. Flight attendants are being trained to provide instructions on wearing face masks. “We believe that someday this will become a regular practice and second nature, just like wearing seat belts”, the spokesman added.

An Air India pilot faces suspension after she defied orders to switch her scheduled direct flight from Mumbai to Delhi. The pilot, Capt Smriti Trehan, insisted on flying via Jaipur causing delays and inconvenience to the passengers. The Elefunt reporters found out that the pilot wanted to fly via Jodhpur to pick up an order for the city’s famous onion kachoris. Her refusal to swap flights delayed the Mumbai-Delhi flight by an hour.

Sources say that Trehan had ordered a batch of pyaz kachoris, which were to be delivered to her at Jodhpur airport. As soon as her flight landed at Jodhpur, the package was delivered to her, and Trehan took off for Delhi without delay. Meanwhile, it was chaos at Mumbai airport as AI‘s 2pm flight was left without a pilot. It took the airline an hour to find a replacement, and the flight eventually took off at 3 pm.

The incident was later brought to the notice of senior AI officials, who ordered an inquiry into the matter. Sources revealed that after the inquiry was ordered, two senior officials tried to scuttle the issue. They requested the pilot to share the Kachoris but she flatly refused and locked herself in the cabin and gobbled up all the contents of the delicacy. However, pressure soon mounted on Air India officials as they could no longer stand the wonderful aroma, and the inquiry was kept open. Unofficial sources have confirmed that the officials will stop the inquiry and cancel the suspension notice if the pilot agrees to order extra boxes and share them with the Air India inquiry team.
